The two countries play different roles: Korea is the lithium volume player — its trio supplies global automakers with NMC and increasingly LFP cells — while Japan pairs a lithium legacy (Panasonic) with the strongest lead-acid and industrial positions (GS Yuasa). The Korean makers also operate major plants in the US under the IRA build-out.
My read: Korea and Japan are the battery industry's incumbents-plus — Korea scaled lithium first outside China, Japan holds the industrial depth — and their shared challenge is competing with Chinese cost on one side and US/EU local-content rules on the other.
Why: The Korean trio's US plants and Japan's premium positions are both answers to the same squeeze: Chinese price pressure plus policy pushing production into customer markets. Reading the two countries together shows the industry's middle tier — the incumbents defending share with footprint, not price.
