The lead-acid layer is mature and market-anchored — Varta is the region's household brand in replacement batteries. The lithium layer is younger and policy-driven: the EU Battery Regulation and automotive demand pushed the gigafactory wave, and the same policy now shapes who survives it (see the Europe market report).
My read: Europe's manufacturer story is a two-layer structure with a deadline — the lead-acid layer is durable, the lithium layer is racing the regulation's compliance clock, and the survivors will be those with automotive offtake secured.
Why: Demand is not the question; the policy timeline is. The gigafactories live or die on reaching scale before the EU's carbon and passport rules penalise imports — a race with a visible clock, which makes European manufacturing a policy story as much as an industrial one.
My editorial view, not investment advice.
